At most online media outfits I know, people just pedal as fast as they can with posts spinning out of that work in very simple ways. What you report and analyze, you write. It’s hard work, but conceptually easy. The whole process of publishing is stripped down to the essentials. The apparatus doesn’t have a lot of costs.

OK, now for my key point: editors are gears.

Without being too mechanistic about the analogy: editors can change the way effort is distributed. They can gear down and have reporters pedal like crazy without posting a ton of stuff. They can throw a bunch of effort at a story so that it can move really quickly. This was really clear during the Boston Marathon bombing coverage. A machine like the Boston Globe can do things that are amazing, in large part because they have a bunch of editors who can direct things. That task is a lot harder in very flat online media organizations that don’t have much editorial gearing.

Cati bani face Google in .ro?

Motto:

Sir Martin Sorrell, WPP: Two things that could stop Google: size (gets too big) or regulation

Me and Mark

Avem cel putin un subiect in comun, ne place Game of Thrones :) :

Saturday, Systrom was back at Zuckerberg’s to formalize the negotiations and come to an official acquisition agreement, which they would both sign. Their back-and-forth was interrupted by a television-watching party for Game of Thrones that Zuckerberg, an avid fan, was throwing. Systrom spent much of the time outside in the yard, on the phone to the lawyers. “I didn’t watch the show,” he says. Rather, he spoke to his investors to inform them of the decision and get a sign-off. “I sat back and thought, What just happened?,” Baseline’s Anderson recalls. “Holy shit—what just happened?”

Attackers/Defenders

And I realized the world of business really separates into these two groups. The attackers are the entrepreneurs who are disrupting the status quo, trying to change the world, take the hill, anything is possible, and have nothing to lose in most cases. They’re driven by passion and the idea and intensity. Large organizations — and it’s true of Fortune 500s and it’s also true of governments and other large organizations — are defenders. These guys aren’t trying to pursue the art of the possible, how to maximize opportunity. They actually are trying to minimize the downside, and hedge risk. They’re trying to de-risk situations. Entrepreneurs can’t even think this way. It’s not even a concept they understand.

For the traditional executives running these large companies, of course they want to grow, of course they want to innovate, of course they’d rather have revenue grow faster than slower, but they mostly don’t want to lose what they’ve got. But entrepreneurs are deathly afraid that they won’t be able to change the world, and that somebody else will. Again, these generalizations are a little unfair, but corporate executives are all too often deathly afraid that the business they inherit will be less valuable when they leave than when they started.

E simplu

Dup? aceast? investi?ie vom putea lansa cel pu?in câte un magazin online propriu pe an, afirm? Dana Iorga.
